About 3 am I woke hot and no sound. The power was off yet again. So no fan and quickly the heat builds up making sleep a restless thing. So I was grateful when Eric said though the spirit was willing his body was weak and did I mind not going to Kumassi. Not at all! A long drive in the heat only to return back the same day was not an attractive option. So we took the kids to school. My hosts Revd Eric and Mary have four children two girls and two boys. The eldest attends a Methodist boarding school near Cape Coast while the three youngest attend University Cape Coast Primary school in the grounds of the University. So its a round trip each day to get them and back. Today we drive deliberately on the way back through Capa Coast the town itself. Past the British fort infamous for its part in the slave trade not something we can be proud of. Then we weaved through the streets with houses cramned so close you wonder how people can live like this, with sewers full of filth everywhere. Yet live they do and with a vibrancy.
Its a strange place of contradictions. Eric and Mary have home help from their boys. Its a two way relationship as they help, particularly Francis through school. He looks after the children like an older brother. He will tell them off, feed them and get them to bed. He is so gentle and when its time to eat brings our food to the table. The Mission House is an open house with church members dropping in and there is no rush. How different to British Methodism where people ring up to make an appointment. And of course at times food is provided as well. Its all done freely and without fuss.
